Our Values

Curiosity

“The best scientists and explorers have the attributes of kids. They ask questions and have a sense of wonder. They have curiosity. Who, what, where, why, when and how! They never stop asking questions, and I never stop asking questions…”. – Sylvia Earle

Re-igniting that childlike curiosity in others, and ourselves – creating a sense of wonder in our oceans to drive relentless exploration in pursuit of understanding and ultimately, protection. According to NOAA only 5% of our Oceans have ever been explored, which is staggering considering they cover 70% of the Earth’s surface and sustain all life. Over 85% of the Coral Triangle waters are oceanic and deep-sea habitats (deeper than 200m). These habitats are largely unexplored with significant “data-gaps” that hamper ocean management efforts.

How much more could we do with complete, detailed and easily accessible information?

Deep Sustainability

“Sustainability, ensuring the future of life on Earth, is an infinite game, the endless expression of generosity on behalf of all”. – Paul Hawken

We strive to create wilderness refugia, by facilitating and supporting the creation of marine protected areas for biodiversity and wilderness values, which in turn will assist with the development of sustainable fisheries, new marine ecotourism and other alternative livelihoods. Sustainable development and “the blue economy” is at the heart of everything we do.

Interconnection

” Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean. ” – Ryunosuke Satoro,  Japanese poet

Absolutely everything is interconnected: no ecology, species, ecosystem, society exists independently, coastal communities rely on the oceans and their lives revolve around them, the oceans sustain all of life on Earth. Planet Deep’s mission to explore, understand and protect, cannot be achieved without interconnectivity being at the core of all we do.

Interconnectivity not just from a science and research perspective, but ingrained in every action we undertake: collaborating and engaging with our fellow conservationists, engaging industry, and empowering local communities with outreach, training and education for informed decision making on what matters most: a better future based on deep sustainability.

Come join us, we can’t save the Oceans on our own!
